The Italian online gaming business saw record sales for the third straight month
The Italian online gaming sector broke its total revenue record in January, making it the third consecutive month that it has done so. Online casino and slot operators collected €162.85m ($193m) in income, according to figures provided by Agenzia delle dogane e dei Monopoli and processed by Ficom Leisure. This is an increase of 6% compared to the previous month and a whopping 99% compared to the same period in 2019.
The total GGR for the market was €335.9 million, which is an increase of about 57% year over year (YOY), although it was a slight step down from an all-time high of €359 million that was established in December. Yet, this statistic demonstrates a continuance of the significant rising momentum created by operators into the second half of 2020.
Due to the fact that the country is still under lockdown limitations, it is not surprising that online verticals topped the GGR rankings. The casino and slot machines were responsible for 48.47% of the earnings, while sports betting brought in 42.76% of the total.
The total amount wagered on online sports in January was €143.64 million, which was a decrease from December's total of €177.1 million but a year-on-year gain of 66%. Despite the ongoing closure of bookmakers, which acts as a barrier to entry for many, full-month sports betting totals have only dropped twice year-over-year since the start of the Serie A football season: in November and January. This is despite the fact that full-month sports betting totals have only dropped twice YOY.
PokerStars continued to lead the market for casinos and slots from the front with just over 11% market share, while Bet365 bounced back from sixth to third place in the market for sports betting; it garnered 12.2% market share, marginally behind regional operators Snai (12.4%) and Sisal (12.8%). PokerStars led the market for casinos and slots with just over 11% market share.
